The Art & Mastery of Facilitation
„Facilitation is like playing the piano. You can practice the piano for years, learning new skills, pieces, and exercises and gaining experience and confidence. But when people want to sing „Happy Birthday“ at a party, knowing what starting note is comfortable for a majority of people and being able to hit that one note on the piano makes a world of difference to how well the group sings together. “

Facilitator Curriculum english (1,3 MB)
Kommunikationslotsen’s Facilitator Curriculum shares internationally-proven facilitation expertise and practical tools which enable genuine dialogue and change in organizations. Special attention is paid to the role, person and intentions of the facilitator when working within an existing system, so that interventions and counselling are effective.
A facilitator has the knowledge and experience necessary to develop individually-customized guidance and processes from the initial idea to actual implementation.
A facilitator turns spectators into participants. People say what they know, because they have more focus and confidence than is the case with the usual processes.
A facilitator preserves the integrity of an organization in difficult times and knows how to make it possible for people to listen to each other and see new possibilities.
Through the use of specific interventions, a facilitator makes it possible for the perceptions, experiences and knowledge of different experts with a system to come together effectively.
- Change through the entire system
- (Whole System Change)
- Cross-divisional dialogues
- Effective meetings & Teamwork
- Leadership Development
Module 1 „Leave routine behind. Create new contexts. „
Module 1 provides an introduction to the working methods and basic assumptions of a facilitator. The methodological repertoire includes an introduction to potential-oriented thinking and working methods (Appreciative Inquiry), the World Café as a workshop for dialogue and reflection and circle methods. In addition to process and method competence, the training provides a pioneering role model for consultants and managers.
Module 2 „Do less. Achieve more. „
Module 2 deepens the aspects and methods introduced in Module 1 and expands the facilitator’s methodological repertoire to include facilitative task clarification, working with pilot groups and Open Space Technology. The subtitle „Do less. Achieve more.“ refers to the role and attitude of the facilitator in task clarification and situation analysis – here it is all about goal-orientated dialogues and asking the right questions at the right time. In addition, the subject of self-organization and the law of two feet both play an important role.
Module allow 3 „Facilitate change in real time.“
Module 3 is devoted to change in real time. The focus is on the facilitator as an advisor on and companion in a change process. Based on practical cases, we analyse process choreography and experience the facilitative attitude in counselling and guidance. In essence, it is about the ability to maintain the integrity of a system or a group during difficult phases of a process – this ability is crucial for Change Facilitators as well as for executives. The methodological repertoire includes Dynamic Facilitation as well as the large group formats „RTSC – Real Time Strategic Change,“ and the future conference.
Module 4 „Facilitation beyond Methods.“
Module 4 goes beyond the methods and consultant-client routines to explore facilitation as a form of being for consultants, coaches and facilitators (The Circle Way). Should facilitators have their own intentions – can we even say that they must have them? How can they achieve genuine autonomy? It is about the facilitator’s footprint – who are we? Who we want to be? Module 4 is completed by a personal experience under the rubric of Retreats & Rituals.
Your personal uses
- You will become thoroughly familiar with the job description and role of the facilitator and learn how to apply your knowledge – it is a very practical course.
- You will develop highly effective expertise in dealing with first solution ideas which usually form part of client briefings. You will advise, clarify tasks and manage contexts in which success is more likely.
- You will develop a differentiated knowledge of various methodologies and intervention techniques. The curriculum will cover the following methods and approaches: work with pilot groups, Appreciative Inquiry, World Café, The Circle Way, Open Space Technology, Dynamic Facilitation, Future Conference, RTSC/Whole Scale Change.
- You will get to know modes of action and the use of participatory process based on dialogue and will be able to decide which approaches are to be used in which situation, at what point which intervention is needed, which method is to be used and how it must be developed further thereafter.
And as a leader…
… You will develop personally and professionally and internalize a pioneering style of leadership. See also our special offer for managers: „Facilitative Leadership – The leadership wisdom that lies in facilitation.“
„You brought much along the way; how you work (as I perceive it), how you work with teams and develop training and how you can also trigger thought processes in the individual.“
Daniel Osterwalder, Facilitator, Consultant, Coach
„I recommend the Facilitator Curriculum in particular because it uses a combination of the learning of methods and self-reflection to bring about a facilitative attitude in a person. I feel more secure in the use of the methods and in my own attitude as a facilitator as a result of these four days.“
Gaby Benjes, Facilitator, Consultant, Coach
„The mindfulness and attention that you have given to working in a circle… I have never seen the opportunities in and the meaning of Circle Work so clearly.“
Susanne Moosdorf, Consultant
„In this development programme (for me this is not a training session, but much more than that) everything comes down to the development of your own attitude. It goes beyond the professional context and has a lasting effect far beyond this… The „high-profile“ participants from different professional contexts were an extra plus and meant that the whole curriculum was run at a very high level. “
Helga von Winter, Facilitator, Consultant, Coach
The Facilitator Curriculum is ideal for you if you are involved in the areas of consulting, coaching, training, management, facilitation and/or teaching and want to learn and use a new paradigm – both methodically and fundamentally.
Kommunikationslotsen on Facilitation:
„It’s not just about facilitating a future conference or a World Café or opening an Open Space. The point is that a facilitator can offer to create and maintain completely different relationships. And in this way facilitators can enable and inspire both customers and other people.“
We work in pairs and offer different coaching teams as part of the curriculum. This expands the range of learning from the model and is in our programme.
